Traveling by metro trains in Chennai is an amazing experience!!
The Coronavirus pandemic has led to closure of operations of these metro trains in Chennai for many months are well known to us. From September month in 2020, metro trains have resumed their services in Chennai and initially the patronage was very low. The patronage gained momentum slowly and many people started using the metro trains to reach their destinations now. After the inauguration of a 9km phase-1 extension line in the month of February in 2021, metro trains regained almost 80% of its daily footfall.
The surprising piece of information is that in December 2021, the daily average passenger footfall of the Chennai metro trains crossed the pre-Covid levels. This has clearly shown that normalcy has returned back again. From 1st December to 30th December 2021, as many as 3720698 passengers traveled in the metro trains in Chennai. This was mentioned by data from CMRL. It is learnt that nearly 1.24lakh passengers used metro trains every day in December.
In February 2020, that is before the Coronavirus pandemic began, metro train average daily patronage was 1.16lakhs. Truth is that the lockdown in March 202 severely affected metro train patronage.
It was mentioned by an officer belonging to CMRL that increased patronage in the metro trains now has been due to the small bus services introduced from the metro stations in places like Alandur, Airport, Koyambedu, Tiruvottriyur etc. The increased patronage in the metro trains has been mainly due to this last mile connectivity.
