Guess how many people will be leaving Chennai now to their native places?

The Coronavirus infection along with the latest Omicron has been sending shock waves and many are getting infected with these infections.

In this scenario, the schools and colleges have been closed and the students have left for their native places already to be with their families for the upcoming Pongal festival.

Yesterday, the buses in Chennai were full of passengers as many desired to go to their native places in various districts belonging to TN to celebrate the Pongal festival.

It is learnt that many passengers thronged CMBT in Koyambedu and also another temporary bus terminus in Chennai to go to their native places. Till 6pm on Wednesday, as many as 1.89 lakhs passengers took 4529 buses from Chennai city. It is well known that Pongal is on Friday and Mattu Pongal on Saturday. On 18th January thaipusam is celebrated. Local holiday has been announced by the government on Monday 17th January and due to this many people who are working in Chennai have started going to their native places on Wednesday itself.

It was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the state transport corporation that additional special buses were operated on Tuesday to ensure 75% of seat occupancy in the buses.    

He explained that initially the transport corporation had planned to operate only 420 special buses from Chennai but as many as663 buses were operated from Chennai for the sake of social distancing norms. In addition to 2100 normal bus services, there would be an additional 1660 special buses that would be operated on Wednesday.

The surprising piece of information is that as many as 3 lakhs persons would be traveling out of Chennai to their native places on Tuesday and Wednesday in both private as well as government buses. This was according to some sources belonging to the transport corporation.
