The schools in Tamil Nadu reopened last week after the long holidays and the students showed huge interest to attend the classes are well known. There were many complaints from the parents that they were forced to pay the school fees as soon as the schools were reopened. The news is that the government of Tamil Nadu would interfere in this issue to provide a solution for the parents.

After the Coronavirus infection pandemic was brought under control, schools including self financing were reopened from 1st February 2022 for the students belonging to the classes 1to 12.

It was brought out by some parents that in some private schools, the students were not allowed to attend the direct physical classes. The school management has asked these students to pay the school fees immediately. There were many videos regarding this issue that caught the attention of many. Tamil Nadu School Fees Regulation Committee has already fixed the fees for the private schools. This was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the school education department.

Those private schools that have been collecting extra amounts than the prescribed one have been warned and the government has been taking strict action. It is worthy to note here that this issue of collecting full fees by the schools began after the schools reopened after the first lockdown.

Many parents have been affected financially due to the lockdown and the High Court of Madras has directed the private schools to collect just 85% of the total fees from the parents in 6 installments for the academic year 2021-22. For the sake of a detailed fee collection plan, the authorities have been discussing this issue with the private school associations to help the parents. Till the normalcy returns again after the Coronavirus pandemic, the amicable plan would be there.

It is now brought to light that the non-payment of fees by the parents have resulted in a situation where salaries could not be issued to the teachers. Other important expenses such as EB payments, tax payments etc could not be carried out.

In several schools across Tamil Nadu, the parents have not paid even 505 of the total fees. This was pointed out by Mr. K.R. Nandhakumar, general secretary, TN Private Nursery, Primary Matriculation, Higher Secondary and CBSE Schools Association. He explained that the textbooks and notebooks for the students could only be purchased if the students pay the fees. The non-payment of fees has led to the situation where the school managements were not able to pay their teachers salaries. Many teachers have resigned due to salary non-payment issues. He concluded that the government of Tamil Nadu must provide a solution for this immediately and solve the financial crisis in many schools.
