To streamline street vending, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to regularise the vending zones in Chennai. The decision has been taken by GCC because of the reduction in the number of Coronavirus cases now. This has caught the attention of many and is spoken in huge esteem.

It was revealed by data from the Chennai Corporation that as many as 912 streets and roads in Chennai have been set aside for street vending. According to an officer belonging to GCC after meetings with the town vending committees in all the GCC zones vending and non-vending zones have been set aside.  In September month itself the vending zones have been finalised but they are not yet implemented. He concluded that in one or 2 months, vending zones would be implemented in Chennai. To allow the free flow of traffic, the ward engineers have been asked to demarcate vending zones on the earmarked streets. It is noteworthy that as many as 4700 streets have been earmarked as non-vending zones in Chennai

The north Chennai based Royapuram zone has got the highest number of vending streets with 122 streets. There would be 112 vending zones each in zones like Adyar, Thiru Vi- Ka Nagar and Alandur.

As many as 103 streets in Valasaravakkam are earmarked as vending streets. It must be noted that in Chennai there are 23000 street vendors who have been issued ID cards by the civic body. Those vendors who did not have any ID card were identified by the recent initiative for issuing ID cards.

There are roughly around one lakh street vendors now in the Chennai city and these vendors would soon be brought under the purview. The main aim was to make these vendors also get the benefits from the state as well as the central government.
