It is well known that north Chennai is highly congested with lots of people and people here face many issues like flooding etc especially in the monsoon season. To mitigate flooding in the north Chennai areas, Greater Chennai Corporation is set to speed up work on the development of integrated stormwater drains in Kosasthalaiyar River basin.  It is worthy to mention that the flood mitigation works are going on in 1935 streets and in 436 streets the work has been completed.

This project would cost Rs 2470 crores and on Friday a GO was issued for the release of Rs 87 crores. Information is that the government`s share for the project would be Rs 681 crores. As financial assistance Asian Development Bank would be providing Rs 1789 crores. In about 14 percent of the proposed stretches, the work has been completed now. Under this project, 759 km of roads in places like Tiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram and parts of Ambattur would be covered. It would take another 3 years for the project work to get completed.

It was mentioned by Mr. Sivakumar, who has won the ward 1 in Thiruvottiyur zone that the residents have requested infrastructure projects to mitigate flooding in places in Ennore such as VOC Nagar, Kamrajar Nagar, Thalankuppam etc.  He threw light on how in the last monsoons the residents belonging to this area experienced severe flooding. Point is that many residents are poor and flooding would have a huge impact on their lives. The residents are now hoping that the flood mitigation works will be completed soon.
