The air pollution due to various vehicles has been high in Chennai and this has been creating many issues for the Chennaites. It seems that the GCC has found a solution to tackle this issue. In Chennai there would be non-motorised transport promoted by GCC where awareness would be created for walking and cycling. A campaign focussing on the development of the cycling tracks and walkways etc was launched by the civic body. It is noteworthy that GCC has urged the Chennai residents to emulate the winners of the national walking, running and cycling challenge.
In the national challenge for running, walking and cycling activities, the health minister Mr. M. Subramaniam has won the first place among 297 leaders including ministers, commissioners and CEOs etc. The Chennai Corporation commissioner, Mr, Gagandeep Singh Bedi came 5th in walking.
It is learnt that the Chennai residents covered 72458km in cycling and bagged the first prize. In the cycling challenge as many as 1059 Chennai residents took part. In the walking category, the Chennai residents 21860kms and they came second. In the future, more infrastructures have been planned by GCC activities like for walking, cycling and running in various localities belonging to the city.
