The state highways department would soon be strengthening various roads present in Chennai and an amount of Rs 45 crores would be spent for this purpose. As per a source it was clear that milling of roads would be compulsory and it would be carried out on those road stretches that were re-laid 5 years back. The cost of milling is Rs 100 per sq km. It must be taken into account that currently the material that is removed is used as filling in embankments.
According to a retired engineer belonging to the state highways department, at various locations in Chennai the strength of the bituminous tar is checked in the longer road stretches. He added that the material gets recycled by the addition of required bitumen. This was mainly done for the road re-laying process. At present, milling as well as re-laying of roads is being carried out in Tambaram-Mudichur Road, Agaramthen Road, Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road etc in Chennai.
It was mentioned by another highways department source that once in 5 years surface renewal must be carried out. This would keep the roads in proper shape for the motorists to drive smoothly. He added that some roads such as Medavakkam-Sholinganallur roads are getting widened. In the nearby divisions also, this kind of strengthening works are being carried out now by the highways department. A portion of the Old Mahabalipuram Road or OMR is being re-laid and this work is a part of Rs 6 crore package.
Many residents were happy regarding the roads getting milled. It was brought out by a resident belonging to Keelkattalai in Chennai that it was good that roads were milled and all agencies must follow this important rule. He mentioned that the interior roads must also be re-laid after milling. He concluded that solutions must be found for locations where houses have gone below road levels.
