The school education department has been handling kindergarten classes in the government schools in Tamil Nadu and this might change soon!!

The sources have mentioned that from the current academic year onwards the kindergarten classes in the government schools in TN would be handed over to the social welfare department from the school education department. It is now brought out that the shortage of teachers and funds was the reason behind this change. This was according to an evaluation report.

In the year 2019, LKG and UKG classes were introduced in the government schools. The main aim was to increase enrolment in TN run schools and retain them till higher secondary classes. These kindergarten classes are now present in as many as 2381governmrnt middle schools that run these classes and around one lakh students study in these schools.

It was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the school education department that from the next academic year classes the kindergarten classes would be under the Directorate of Integrated Child Development Services or ICDS, Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Programme department. Soon, an order would be released in this regard.

The senior officer explained that the decision to hand over the kindergartens in the government schools to the social welfare department was taken on the basis of the evaluation report. He added that unavailability of funds and shortage of teachers were 2 other factors that were responsible for this change. It must be noted that the teachers handling kindergarten classes would be transferred to teach students from classes 1 to 5. Point is that ICDS already has experience in handling LKG and UKG classes and they would handle kindergarten very well. To maintain these classes, the directorate would also handle the funds. He concluded that LKG and UKG would follow the kindergarten syllabus prepared by SCERT.
