Today, 8th March, International Women’s Day is celebrated and on this occasion Avadi police commissionerate has taken an amazing decision. This special day is celebrated to recognise social, cultural, economic and political achievements of a woman.

Women police officers would be given charge of all the police stations under Avadi police commissionerate. This would be done mainly to recognise the role played by women personnel.  Truth is that this would be the first such initiative ever in India. It must be noted that G. Umayal DCP (headquarters and administration) would be head of both Avadi as well as RedHills police districts. B. Vijayakumari additional CoP (headquarters and traffic) would take up the additional charge as Joint Commissioner. Those women officers who are in the rank of inspectors and sub-inspectors would be made station house officers and they would be in-charge of the police station for the entire day.

Police commissioner of Avadi, Mr. Sandeep Rai Rathore threw light on how there are already many women inspectors heading police stations. He added that the plan to have women leading the entire commissionerate would send a superb message to the society on the importance of women empowerment. It is learnt that the commissionerate has got nearly 650 women personnel with senior officers and 25 police stations.
