We are in the month of March and the peak summer is approaching now fast!!
The Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai received seasonal fruits and with this the prices of fruits dropped by 20percent. The traders are hoping that their business will pick up by the month end onwards.
As per Mr. M. Jayakumar, member of Koyambedu Fruits Merchants Association it was clear that normally when the seasonal fruits like watermelons and musk melons etc arrive at the market there would be brisk sales. Now, the seasonal fruits have arrived and one week has gone but the business hasn’t yet picked up. It is learnt that for the last 2 days due to weather change the fruits were unsold in the market. It must be taken into account that the fruit market would receive `15 to 20 truck loads of summer season fruits with the hope that the fruits would be purchased by the public. Now, there are possibilities of fruits getting wasted.
According to a wholesale trader at this market, there are hopes that the business might pick up by the end of the month. The prices of summer fruits would only increase and other fruits would remain stable. He spoke about the mango and jackfruit season that would start next month. He concluded that the prices might surge double than usual due to more demand. Currently, at the Koyambedu market, water melons are being sold for Rs 10 to Rs 12 per kilogram and muskmelons at Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kilo.
