On Thursday, 10th March, World Kidney day was celebrated. The state health minister Mr. M. Subramaniam grabbed many eyeballs when he launched a statewide survey to document the burden of chronic kidney diseases in TN at RGGGH in Chennai. Institute of Nephrology and Department of Community Medicine in RGGGH would be carrying out the survey and it would be funded by National Health Mission TN and under the guidance of DPH.
As many as 5300 participants would be chosen from the state for the survey and it would get over in 5 days. For survey purposes, the field workers would be screening the participants for chronic kidney disease or CKD by checking blood sugar levels and creatinine levels. For testing purposes, urine and blood would be collected from the participants.
Dr. N Gopalakrishnan, director of institute of nephrology at RGGGH mentioned that the participants would be given a questionnaire. Sengadu village near Sriperumbudur near Chennai was identified as a CKD hotspot by the team belonging to RGGGH. Here, 4 persons were diagnosed with CKD and they needed dialysis. At an event on Thursday at RGGGH, the health minister handed over the testing kit for survey purposes to a field worker. At tower-2 in RGGGH, the health minister also inaugurated a 24 hour chest clinic. It is now revealed that persons with chest pain could come to the clinic any time to get screened. By this, early treatment could be given if it is due to heart issues.
A booklet regarding protection of kidneys was released by the health minister. It is important to note that 100 patients are now on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis at RGGGH and every month 3000 dialysis are provided for the patients. On Thursday, other important personalities who made their presence felt at RGGGH were health secretary Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, DME Dr. Narayana Babu and Dean of RGGGH Dr. Theranirajan etc.
