Anna University or AU in Chennai is one of the premier universities in India and many students enrol in this university for their research works etc.

It is now brought out that the enrolment of students in AU for PhD’s for the academic year 2021-22 was double when compared to the enrolment for PhDs in the previous years. This increase in the enrolment for research programmes in AU has been mainly due to the fact that doctoral degrees would soon become compulsory for the direct recruitment for the posts of assistant professor at the universities.

There are 4 campus colleges and engineering colleges under Anna University in the state of Tamil Nadu. The surprising piece of information is that 2293 students got enrolled for research programmes in these AU based institutions for the academic year 2021-22. It must be noted that in 2020-21 as many as 1112 students got enrolled for their research studies in these institutions under AU. On the other hand, the students were not keen doing ME/M. Tech programmes and there has been a consistent drop regarding these PG programmes at AU.

Mr. R. Velraj, vice-chancellor of AU spoke about how on an average 1000 PhD scholars get enrolled at AU for doing their research studies. Information is that AU calls for applications for PhD programmes in the months of January and July every year. The Coronavirus pandemic spread in 2020 was responsible for AU not calling applications for PhD programmes and those interested would have applied later on. He concluded that the rise in the PhD admissions now could be due to the pent-up demand.

According to a senior faculty at A, the rise in the PhD programme admissions now could also be due to the fact that having a doctorate degree would become mandatory for the posts of assistant professors in the universities. He added that the availability of several fellowships for doctoral research in India and abroad might be also a reason for more students getting enrolled for research programmes. The increase in the admissions for PhD is a good sign but AU must make sure that quality research work is produced by these research scholars.
