The peak summer is round the corner!!

Normally, in the summer seasons, Chennai would experience drinking water shortage. This time around, there won’t be any such problem for the Chennai residents. There is enough water available in the 6 reservoirs that supply water to the residents. It was pointed out by WRD that in this summer season Chennai would not have a drought situation. In the month of April, Krishna water would also be discharged and Chennai would receive more than 8 TMC of water.

According to a senior official belonging to WRD, the total water capacity of the 6 reservoirs was 13222 TMC. The seasonal rainfall in 2021 has led to the current volume of 9976 TMC in the reservoirs now. The NE monsoons have resulted in 80% of water storage in the Chennai reservoirs.

Truth is that there won’t be any drought in Chennai in this summer season and water would be available for the residents till then end of the year. During the NE monsoon this year, a good amount of rainfall is expected.  In the month of January every year, Andhra Pradesh discharges Krishna water to Chennai. Two months back, the reservoirs had 90% of water storage and that was because of heavy rainfall in the monsoon season.  As the water bodies did not have any space to receive additional water, WRD had requested AP to discharge Krishna water in April month.

It was mentioned by the senior officer that Chennai would get Krishna water from April onwards. It must be noted that there would be additional water supply this year as against the normal discharge of 8 TMC. The reason for that was due to AP having enough water storage in the water bodies. There are plans from WRD to construct new reservoirs and enhance the present dams in the Chennai city.
