The air quality in Chennai for the last 2 weeks was moderate and now the air quality has become satisfactory. Truth is that the pollution levels recorded in Chennai on Sunday 17th March 2022 was within the permissible limit of 60 micrograms per cubic metre. The quality of air in Chennai became better due to less humidity now.
This was according to the TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. It was later confirmed by data from CPCB that the air quality in Chennai city has improved when compared to the air quality that was present in the last 2 weeks.
It must be taken into account that PM 2.5 in Alandur showed 42microgms/cubic metre, Arumbakkam 44 micrograms/cubic metre, Kodungaiyur 55 micrograms/ cubic metre, Manali 53microgms per cubic metre, Perungudi 29 micrograms per cubic metre etc. The air quality was considered satisfactory and good in certain localities as it was within the permissible 60micrograms per cubic metres.
It is worth mentioning here that for the last 2 weeks, the pollution levels in Chennai crossed the permissible limit of PM2.5. This usually leads to breathing issues to those with asthma and heart diseases etc.
On 20th of March Alandur reported 65microgms per cubic metres, Arumbakkam 74micrograms per cubic metres and Manali reported 68 micrograms per cubic metres. All these were above the permissible limit. On 13th March, air pollution was alarming in Chennai with Manali recoring 147 micrograms per cubic metres, Kodungaiyur 141micrograms per cubic metres etc.
The dry weather was responsible for the surging in the air quality in Chennai and this was as per a senior officer belonging to TNPCB. He explained that recently humidity has reduced in Chennai and cool breeze in the evenings has improved the air quality now in several places in the Chennai city.
