The news that has come out now is that JICA or Japan international Cooperation Agency has signed a loan agreement with GOI to provide Japanese Official Development Assistance or ODA of Rs 4710 crores or Japanese yen 73000 million. This huge amount would be used for construction of Chennai Metro Rail Phase-2 Project.

It must be taken into note that Mr. Rajat Kumar Mishra, Additional Secretary Dept of Economic Affairs, Union ministry of Finance and Saito Mitsunori, Chief Representative, JICA India signed the agreement. By this, seamless travel would be possible for the commuters through inter-connecting existing metro systems. This would also put an end to unnecessary traffic congestion and accidents etc in the Chennai city.

By expansion of the mass rapid transport system in Chennai, regional economic development would be boosted. It is revealed that an additional metro rail system network of 51kms would be developed by this project. This would include Corridor 3 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur and Corridor 5 Madhavaram Milk Colony to CMBT.

It is superb to mention that road traffic would be reduced and there would be a shift to the public transportation system. Finally, pollution would also be reduced in Chennai city.

It is learnt that when metro work gets over comfortable, reliable and greener transport would be available for Chennai residents. This was according to Mr. Mitsunori, Chief Representative JICA India office.

He added that JICA was proud to join hands with CMRL. Information is that by modal shift from road traffic to public transportation, vehicular pollution & traffic accidents would be addressed by the Chennai metro. He concluded that the new loan would support CMRL in strengthening its operational structure and a convenient mode of transportation would be provided to the residents.
