Although the water situation in Chennai has improved, it is still too early to heave a sigh of relief. According to sources, it will be at least another 3 months or so for the supply of Krishna water from the Kandaleru dam to reach 830 million litres a day (mld), which is considered ‘normal’. Currently, the supply is at 550 mld.
A breach in the canal from the Kandaleru dam reduced inflow into the city’s reservoirs. Andhra Pradesh has promised up to 1000 cusecs of Krishna water. “It would be sufficient if Andhra Pradesh maintains 200cusecs discharge for the next three months. That would help stabilise the storage and ensure the existing supply till mid-October. If the rain fills the reservoirs, that would be bonus”, said a senior official from Chennai’s Metro Water.
