Work started by metro water department in Chennai for improving sewer network

Reduction in the sewage outfalls in minor water channels linked to Cooum in Anna Nagar and Ambattur zones!!
The news now is that CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has begun its work to improve the sewer network. For improving the sewage collection system in the adjoining 27 streets, metro water department is laying a new sewer line from Padi Pudhu Nagar Junction to sewage pumping station in S.M. Nayanan Nagar, Mogappair.
To carry out the work of increasing the capacity of sewer pipeline for a distance of nearly 550m & to reduce outfalls in Padi Kuppam canals, a portion of the busy Thirumangalam- Ambattur Road has been barricaded. It is known that this channel joins the Cooum River. Traffic from Mogappair, Anna Nagar West Extension and Ambattur with Anna Nagar has been linked by arterial roads.
There have been many complaints regarding the leaking of old sewer pipelines in every monsoon season. This was according to some officials belonging to CMWSSB. Once the work gets over, sewage overflowing from maintenance holes and flowing into drains due to inadequate carrying capacity of the sewer lines would be reduced.
Pollution in the minor canals leading to Cooum River would be stopped. It must be noted that the work would have to be carried out in the day on the Tirumangalam Road due to deep sewer work.
From Thirumangalam junction, work is being carried out for a distance of about 1.1km till Imayam Colony sewage pumping station on the east main road also. It is learnt that the metro water agency has started its work of re-laying sewer pipelines through interior lanes and improving sewage collection infrastructure for a distance of 2.7km at Shanthi Colony in Anna Nagar. It is known that there has been frequent bursting of sewage pipelines in the monsoon season.
It was mentioned by an officer belonging to CMWSSB that minor works have been carried out in the interior roads as well as on the Mogappair Road to divert sewage into the sewer network. He added that efforts have been taken to stop sewage outfalls into waterways. The residents have appreciated this and have pointed out that direct sewage outfalls into Pallikuppam drain must be stopped.
