Would you believe this!! Over the past 10 years, Chennai has recorded a 1648 percent increase in cyber crime complaints. This was according to the Home Department Policy note.
The chief minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin mentioned this in the state Assembly yesterday and took many by surprise. In the year 2011 the number of complaints regarding cyber crimes was at 748 and it increased to 13077 in the year 2021. Various factors such as digitization, internet penetration, and increased use of mobile phones etc have led to this massive increase in the number of cyber crime complaints.
Mr. V. Rajendran, chairman, Digital Security Association of India threw light on how the increased electronic transactions have resulted in more cyber based crimes now. Earlier, cheques and DD were used by many transactions. Now, less than 10% of transactions take place through cheques.
In online crimes, once the investigation crosses the golden time or the first 24 hours it would be near impossible to get back the stolen money. This was as per a senior police official belonging to the cyber crime team. In all the 11 districts belonging to the Greater Chennai Police, cyber crime teams were formed. This was in addition to the 5 cyber crimes police stations. This was as per the policy note.
Mr Rajendran then compared cyber crimes and other crimes and said that the police department would be able to track record and thwart attempts to commit crimes but in cyber crimes police departments won’t be able to do these. Truth is that only the public would be able to avoid cybercrimes.
The superb piece of information is that the possibility of cracking cyber crimes has improved over the years. In the last few years, many young and enthusiastic engineering degree holders have entered into the police department. It is true that the passion and knowledge of these professionals would be useful in solving many cases. Information is that a cyber forensic lab has been set up with high-end forensic workstation, disc forensic, mobile forensic and social media tools. An amount of Rs 6.90 crores has been spent on this under the safe city project.
