On 14th May 2022, Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC would be launching a mass cleaning drive in all its 15 zones in Chennai. For this, 1000 additional conservancy workers, 500 malaria control workers and 182 heavy machineries would be used. For the first day of the drive, the most polluted ward with the largest amount of waste and debris along the streets in each of the 15 zones has been identified.
For creating awareness and mobilising support for the drive, workers belonging to Chennai Corporation have visited 41060 households in 15 wards. For cleaning work, a total of 7km of storm water drains were identified. In another set of wards belonging to each of 15 zones, another mass cleaning drive would be held. At 150 locations in Chennai, potholes would be repaired and street lights that are not functioning properly would be changed etc.
It is important to mention here that mass cleaning would be carried out in Ward 10 in Tiruvottiyur, Ward 19 in Manali, ward 25 in Madhavaram, Ward 36 in Tondiarpet, ward 62 in Royapuram, ward 69 in Thiru VI Ka Nagar, Ward 87 in Ambattur and Ward 97 in Anna Nagar, Ward 125 in Teynampet, Ward 142 in Kodambakkam, Ward 150 in Valasaravakkam, Ward 167 in Alandur, Ward 169 in Adyar, Ward 186 in Perungudi and Ward 192 in Sholinganallur.
On 14th May, more than 280tonnes of waste and 376 tonnes of debris would be cleared by GCC. A detailed action plan has been made by all 15 GCC zones. It is learnt that in Teynampet zone 87 streets in ward 125 have been identified. Point to be noted is that source reduction and mosquito control works would be carried out. Locations where waste has been dumped (not removed by private conservancy workers) would be identified by the resident welfare associations
