Many office goers now in Chennai depend on the suburban trains to reach their destinations. On Tuesday, 10th May 2022, the office goers faced hardships as the operations of the suburban trains were affected. It must be taken into account that around 11 suburban trains piled up between Basin Bridge and Avadi.
This was due to the fact that power supply to the overhead line was affected between Vysarpadi and Basin Bridge for nearly 2 hours. The heavy rains and gusty winds were responsible for the damage to the overhead cables. After the issue was resolved, the suburban trains started to function from 8:25am onwards.
Point is that the halting of trains led to overcrowding at Korattur, Villivakkam, Ambattur and Avadi railway stations. It must be noted that some passengers alighted and walked along the railway tracks to catch buses and cabs etc. For about 30 to 45 minutes, there was delay in trains like Trivandrum express, Jolarpettai express etc. Truth is that the Chennai bound fast local left Arakkonam at 7:10 am and it reached Avadi by 9:10 am only.
It was mentioned by a commuter that the train was operated in a slow line instead of fast line and it was late by 45 minutes. He threw light on how he booked a cab to reach his office at Teynampet from Avadi station. Around 12:30am, heavy winds damaged the roofs of Chengalpet station and damage was caused to signal poles and overhead lines in the Chengalpattu- Villupuram Section. From 12:40 am to 2:15am train departure from Egmore was affected.
