Sensational news regarding eco-restoration of 75 lakes in Chennai etc!!

The Water Resources Department or WRD has been taking huge efforts in the last 2 years and it has restored and beautified 4 lakes in Chennai. The news now is that WRD would do these works in another 75 lakes that are present in Chennai and in the neighbouring Tiruvallur district. The restoration works would be carried out under an eco-restoration project.

Point to be noted is that the eco-restoration works would be started soon and it would be done along with the Environmentalist Foundation of India. It must not be forgotten that the lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic had stopped all the activities of WRD. It is known that WRD has commenced restoration works of Paruthipattu, Ambattur, Korattur and Retteri lakes. In the last 2 years, the works were completed and these lakes were reopened for the public.

This is 75th year after India got independence. Now, WRD has identified 75 lakes for eco-restoration in Chennai and in Thiruvallur districts to coincide with 75th year of independence. As per an officer from WRD it was clear that most lakes are located in Tiruvallur district and other lakes in Chennai. The eco-restoration works would be done in a phased manner.

According to EFI founder Mr. Arun Krishnamurthy, the works would be carried out along the ORR and this would include lakes in places like Poonamallee and Nazarathpet etc. Vellanur lake in the upstream of Puzhal plus a lake near Cho;lavaram would also be restored. On 5th June 2022, a massive cleaning up work on the World Environment Day was initiated by EF with 7500 volunteers is known. 

Restoration of these lakes would start after cleaning up works get over. Mr. Arun Krishnamurthy later spoke about how works would be carried out in a phased manner and how atleast few lakes would be ready before NE monsoon.

Polluted lakes have been identified first and this was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the WRD. He explained how the restoration works were carried out in the past. In the beginning, clearing of encroachments were done followed by de-silting of water bodies and strengthening of bunds etc.
