Kauvery Hospitals in Chennai has added another feather to its cap now!!

An eighty two year old person with multiple heart valve disease has now got a new lease of life thanks to the Kauvery Hospitals in Chennai. This is the first time a new procedure was used to treat this heart issue. The procedure involved 2 valve- in- valve replacement using a transcatheter. It is noteworthy that a pacemaker was also implanted through transcatheter in the same procedure for resolving slow heart rate.

The patient from Coimbatore aged 82 had several issues like severe aortic valve leak, mitral valve leak, moderately leaking tricuspid valve along with severe pulmonary hypertension etc. In this heart condition (also called as leaky valve issue) the heart valve doesn’t close properly leading to leakage in the blood flow. This would create a huge strain to the heart for effective pumping of blood. The person would get heart failure or cardiac arrest if not treated properly.

A senior consultant interventional cardiologist Dr. R. Anantharaman spoke about how the patient had a history of leakage of both mitral and aortic valve and moderately leaking tricuspid valve.

He added that in 2012 the patient had valve replacement surgery and his aortic valve was replaced with 21mm bioprosthetic valve and mitral valve was replaced with 31mm bioprosthetic valve. His tricuspid valve was repaired. It must be noted that a bypass graft to the left of the front anterior descending artery was also carried out. The 82 year old patient’s heart functioning went down significantly and after surgery he was on medical treatment.

It must be noted that in 2022 his situation worsened and he was unable to walk or lie down. Re-narrowing in his aortic as well as in the mitral bioprosthetic valves was shown in the ECHO. Since he was aged normal surgery was ruled out and valve in valve replacement with transcatheter was carried out successfully on him for both aortic and mitral valves.

Information collected is that transcatheter procedure is usually recommended for those who had undergone open heart surgery with tissue valve. Point is that the recovery time in this new procedure is faster than the surgical procedure.
