Taking a dip in the sea is a wonderful experience!!

A new app would help the public to decide about taking a dip in the sea in Chennai. This mobile app Clean Coast would be launched by Chennai based National Centre for Coastal Research or NCCR in the month of July. Information about the quality of the coastal water plus the forecast would be made available for the public through this app.

The application from NCCR would also warn the public regarding safe swimming conditions through colour codes revealing low, medium and high risk etc. Many who do not know about the issues they could get by swimming in bad quality water would also benefit by this new app.

It is worth mentioning that water quality buoys have been deployed at a depth of 10m around 2km of Marina Beach near Cooum in Chennai and Puducherry coast etc. Based on the quality parameters collected from the buoy, water quality water index is calculated. The date from the buoy would be used by a computer model to predict a larger area. It is now said that the users would have to just select the city and this app would provide details about the beach upon clicking from the beaches that have been listed.

NCCR scientist Dr. Prakash Mishra later explained that the users would be able to get water quality index, data on several parameters, present weather conditions, 3 day prediction on water quality etc. By using this app, the users would be able to report issues like oil pollution or debris etc on the beaches also. For the frequent beach goers, this app would be very useful. He spoke about how major changes (because of sewage and waste) to the coastal water quality takes place only 2km from the coast and not observed after that.
