The metro stations as well as MRTS stations in Chennai might be good for the common public as they have superb facilities but for differently able persons these stations are not satisfactory.
Many persons with physical issues face lots of difficulties in the metro stations and in the MRTS railway stations in Chennai. It must be noted that in the metro stations the presence of horizontal and vertical gaps is an issue. Hence, those persons with physical issues have to take the help of other persons and this despite using a powered wheelchair.
It is learnt that none of the MRTS railway stations in Chennai is friendly for those persons who have physical issues. Truth is that metro stations are little better when compared to MRTS railway stations but not fully safe. The gap between the trains and platforms at the metro stations in Chennai has been creating issues for the differently able persons. There are chances that the wheelchair gets stuck in the gap and this would make the person lose his or her balance and fall down.
According to Mr. P. Satish, a member of DRA, it was clear that the MRTS train was roughly 1 to 1.5 feet higher than the platform at any station. He mentioned that the level of the platform must be increased and it could be carried out in a phased way. Not only that, but also the door size in MRTS trains and the gap between 2 seats in the trains must be widened for the sake of differently abled persons. This would help the persons using wheelchairs or crutches to pass by.
It was brought out by CMRL that when the load becomes full then the train and platform would come to the same level. Bitter truth is that persons using wheelchairs cannot rely on these.
