Many senior persons who travel by metro trains in Chennai find it difficult to climb the staircases at the metro stations. This would not be an issue in the future. The senior commuters would feel relieved hereafter..

It is now revealed that CMRL would be installing 20 escalators in various metro stations in Chennai in the coming months in the phase-1 project. From the year 2015, phase-1 project with 32 metro stations began functioning and even in 2022 many metro stations lack escalator facility. This has become an issue for many senior or elder commuters who use metro trains to reach their destinations in Chennai. According to some sources from CMRL, in many stations CMRL has decided to have fewer escalators that were planned already.

To reduce the construction cost in some metro stations, plans to have escalators were dropped. In a few metro stations, in place of 2 escalators just one escalator has been installed. It is worth mentioning that the commuters could take escalators for going up but for going down one or two levels below the commuters had to take stairs or elevators.

It was explained by an officer belonging to CMRL that in several metro stations an escalator facility would be coming up in the future. He hinted that an amount of Rs 30 crores would be spent for installing 20 escalators. Various metro stations in Chennai that would get escalators are Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Alandur, Teynampet, Nandanam, Toll Gate, Thyagaraya  College, Chennai Central and Egmore. In the next few months, the escalators would be installed at these metro stations and this was confirmed by the official from CMRL.

It was pointed out by a commuter that the metro station at Saidapet has 65 steep steps at the B3 exit without any escalator. He added that the exit leads to 2 hospitals close by and many senior patients suffer.
