The WRD or Water Resources Department would start the maintenance work at the Poondi reservoir and due to this reason Krishna water supply would not be there for a week. In the last 2 months, TN received 2.6 TMC of Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh but the state was expecting 6 TMC of Krishna water. It was confirmed by an officer from WRD that inspite of suspension in the supply of Krishna water there would not be any water crisis.
It was later highlighted by a senior official from WRD that in the next 2 to 3 months NE monsoon would start. He added that as a part of flood control project the shutter work of Poondi reservoir would be taken up in the coming days. Already Poondi reservoir has got 1 TMC water and if more water is stored then it would not be possible to carry out the maintenance works.
He concluded that a letter was sent to AP government last week regarding suspending Krishna water from 1st of July 2022. It is noteworthy that there would be a gradual reduction in the discharge of water and within a week the release of Krishna water would come to a halt. Poondi reservoir might get atleast 3 TMCs in the coming days and later it would be suspended.
Eight TMC of Krishna water were received by TN in 2021 and even in monsoon good amounts of rainwater was recorded. This was according to an officer belonging to WRD. In this 2022, just 3 TMC water has reached Chennai from AP but it would not result in the water crisis in Chennai for next 6 months because other reservoirs like Chembarambakkam and Red hills are 90percent full.
It must not be forgotten that on 5th May 2022 AP released around 500 cusecs and 480cusecs of water reached the Poondi reservoir on 9th of May 2022.
