How these 3 Govt engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu would become different from other engineering colleges?

Printed circuit boards or PCB’s, 3-D printing, Internet of Things or IoT etc!! Sound’s incredible isn’t it!!

These are the important converging technologies and in the future the government engineering colleges in places like Trichy, Tirunelveli and Salem would become sensational with a new addition.

Information gathered is that TANSIM or Tamil Nadu Start-up and Innovation Mission would be establishing 3 Fab labs one each in the government engineering colleges in the above said places in Tamil Nadu.

The engineering students would be able to study these converging technologies and would get first hand information regarding the process and technologies behind the production of an electronic component with the help of Fab labs in their colleges. This was mentioned by Mr. Sivarajah Ramanathan, CEO of TANSIM.

All credit must go to the highly popular MIT or Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA (for creating Fab Labs)  to locally conceptualise, design, develop, fabricate and test anything. Truth is that for micro local businesses a thriving incubator would be provided by Fab Labs. Based on the model from MIT, the TN government would also be establishing Fab Labs soon. A syllabus and a methodology has been created by MIT, USA for setting up of Fab Labs.

Mr. Sivarajah mentioned that the same methodologies would be adopted to manufacture the desired equipment. It must be noted that TANSIM has been given the responsibility of being the nodal agency for establishing Fab Labs in these TN engineering colleges. An amount of Rs 2.2 crores would be spent for stabling 3 Fab Labs in three engineering colleges and for that TANSIM would associate with DOTE.

To get the required training in the converging technologies, Fab Labs require additional courses for the engineering students apart from the regular syllabus. To enable the engineering students to get hands-on training for prototyping on appropriate engineering and electronic equipment or platforms.

The proposed Fab Labs would be combined with a course called Proto-sem or Prototyping semester. With the help of a partner organisation, TANSIM would be implementing this programme. The superb piece of information is that MSMEs and start-up ecosystem would be utilising the Fab Labs.
