In addition to the 140 airports present in India, there would be an addition of 80 airports in the next 3 years. This has been planned by the civil aviation ministry. This was mentioned by Mr. V.K. Singh, Union minister of state for road transport, highways and civil aviation.
He shed light on how the project was based on a capex oriented budget and hence was on schedule. He was busy reviewing the highway related works in Vellore yesterday. A new airport terminal has been taking shape in Chennai and it will become operational soon.
Regarding the proposed Greenfield airport for Chennai, the minister explained that initially 4 sites were identified and later they were reduced to 2 sites. The decision from the TN government is being awaited now regarding the choice of the site. He then spoke about Vellore airport and said it was for the state government to inform the civil aviation ministry. Point is that the ministry has been proceeding according to the needs of the TN state government without any interference.
Regarding the new name for Madurai airport, the Union minister Mr. V.K. Singh explained that it was the state to decide on the new name and pass a resolution in the Assembly. Then it must be forwarded to the Central government for scrutiny by the cabinet. It is known that many people want the Madurai airport to be named after Muthuramalinga Devar.
It was later hinted by the Union minister that the toll plazas across India would be removed and efforts have been going on regarding this. The toll amount would be collected either by GPS or by ITMS or intelligent traffic management system. It would be based on the mileage the driver has driven his vehicle and it would come into effect in another 2 years across India.
