Flood prone Mambalam in Chennai is witnessing this important activity now?

The encroachments in flood prone localities like Mambalam etc in Chennai are being removed now by Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC. This has attracted the attention of many. Encroachments on the roads and SWD present in Mambalam were removed by GCC authorities on Monday, 11th July 2022. This was done as per the court order. It is learnt that TNUHDB has allotted houses to all the families.
According to an officer from GCC it was confirmed that Mambalam was a flood prone locality and many encroachments were identified on SWD. In the Valliammal Gardens and in Rangarajapuram in the Kodambakkam zone there were 67 encroachments that have been present for over 2 decades.
Truth is that some dwellers had put up structures such as bathrooms and toilets on the SWD in this flood prone locality in Chennai. There were objections from local residents and they even filed a case in the High Court in Madras. Now, HC has given instructions to GCC to remove the encroachments in Mambalam. Help from the state government has been sought after by the GCC to relocate the families as most of them were poor. The families would be relocated to TNUHDB tenements. Dwellers in 67 houses would be relocated to Athipattu and TN government has agreed to partly fund the beneficiaries own contribution.
To help the beneficiaries to get loans etc, GCC has linked with local financial institutions. The families have given their approval to move out from here. This was according to some officials from GCC.
