In some persons, cancerous cells grow within the linings of the stomach and this is known as stomach cancer. It would not be easy to identify stomach cancer as the majority of the people do not show any symptoms. Also termed as gastric cancer, this cancer is a very serious issue and it would be only known after it has spread to other areas of the body. It is noteworthy that when the healthy cells of the upper digestive system become malignant and spread without any control into a tumour then stomach cancer develops.
There are certain early signs of stomach cancer and we must never ignore them
Nausea vomiting:
It must be noted that persistent nausea coupled with gagging and vomiting of little pieces of food that a person has just consumed are early signs of stomach cancer. Point is that when a person vomits then he or she would throw up the contents of partially digested food before meals. This would be mainly due to the fact that food and drinks consumed by the person cannot reach duodenum or the first part of the GI tract.
Bloating:
There would be accumulation or collection of fluid inside the abdominal cavity when stomach cancer spreads to the lining of the abdomen. This would then make the wall of the stomach very stiff. By this, the capacity of the stomach to hold food would be reduced. The person would feel extremely bloated.
Heartburn:
When a person consumes large meals then he or she would experience acid reflux issue. The persistent heartburn would make a person to develop Barnett`s oesophagus. In this disorder, the lining of the oesophagus gets replaced by a tissue that is similar to small intestine. Depending on the potential of tumour acid reflux would occur and food would be restricted to reach the small intestine if the size becomes more.
Full feeling after small meals:
Normally, a person would not feel full after eating a small amount of food. Truth is that cancer could affect the metabolism of the body and inflammatory cytokines would get boosted. This would have a huge impact on neurotransmitters that would control hunger.
Low grade fever:
When cancer develops in the stomach, then the person would have low grade fever frequently. It is advised to consult a doctor when the temperature becomes more than 100.5 degrees F for some days.
Difficulty in swallowing:
This is also one early important sign of stomach cancer. P[oi9nt is that frequent heartburns would manifest as lumps in the throat sensation. When there is a difficulty in swallowing, then it might reveal the presence of oesophageal cancer.
Blood stains in stools:
Blood stained stools would indicate the presence of stomach cancer in a person. It could also be due to some non cancer based illness also. Hence, consulting a doctor is necessary.
Diarrhoea or constipation:
When a tumor develops, then the small intestine might get blocked and this would result in diarrhoea. Persons could also have constipation issues and this would be due to constriction and narrowing of the gut.
