In the future in Chennai and in Kancheepuram, we might come across green temples that would be climate resilient. It must be taken into note that this would be the first of its kind in the entire India. It is believed that this would improve the tourist footfall in the state of TN.

In this climate resilient green temples initiative, temples would be developed and these temples would be able to withstand any climate change. Various basic facilities that would be available in the upcoming green temples are solid waste treatment plant, drinking water plus others like microplastics management facility etc.

Environment secretary Supriya Sahu explained that in the first phase climate resilient temples would come in places like Chennai and Kancheepuram and later on it would be extended to other temples also in the next phase.  Identifying the temples is going on now and by the beginning of the month of August the work would get completed. She hinted that enough care would be taken so that the heritage of the temples doesn`t get lost.

It is worthy to mention that developing climate resilient green temples is considered as the pilot project and this would be used to make the buildings in TN also climate resilient. Point is that the pilot project would shed light on some important measures that would be adopted for the buildings of cultural and heritage value to make them resilient to changes in climate.

Supriya Sahu later mentioned that the pilot project would have efficient solar lightning, water management, heat management, greening, eco-restoration of temple tanks, interventions to remove plastics, temple garden enrichment etc. She added that by carrying out these activities at the temples more tourists would come to the state. It is well known that in Tamil Nadu tourism has been based mostly on the temples.
