Long wait will be ending and two roads in Chennai will become pedestrian plazas in the future!! Thanks to the efforts taken by GCC!!
These 2 roads are present in localities like Nungambakkam ( that is Khader Nawaz Khan Road) and in Old Washermenpet( that is M.C. Road) in Chennai. It is now revealed that decks have been cleared and these 2 roads would be converted into pedestrian plazas. The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has invited bids to begin civil works. This project was conceived 2 years back itself is well known.
It is learnt that MC Road in Old Washermenpet would become an open mall and GCC would be stopping any movement of vehicles here. An officer belonging to the GCC explained that alternate roads present parallel to M.G. Road would be used for traffic movement. He added that once completed MC. Road would become an open mall and parking space.
An amount of Rs 23 crores would be spent for creating MC Road pedestrian plaza and for Rs 15 crores KNK Road Pedestrian plaza would be created. Under the Mega Street project, the pedestrian plaza would be implemented. There is a pedestrian plaza now at T. Nagar which is the first ever in Chennai city.
In the future, pedestrian plazas created in Nungambakkam and Old Washermanpet would be the second and third such in Chennai city. For redeveloping roads and streets belonging to the selected areas in Chennai, Mega Street project was launched by GCC.
It is noteworthy that during the phase 1 of the project GCC has decided to take up roads in localities like Nungambakkam, Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Adyar, Velachery, Tondiarpet, George Town, Thiruvottiyur etc. The change in the government has resulted in the initiative to be dropped.
To make it safer for the motorists etc, there would be revamping of traffic rountana at Pantheon Road- Gandhi Irwin Bridge and in Arunachalam Street junction in Egmore.
It is worthy to mention that currently the traffic island is smaller making the roads at the junction wider. This would be dangerous for the riders. In the future, this island would be expanded and safety features would be included.
