The Tamil Nadu government has allotted 21.24 acres of defence land and this has indeed boosted the modernisation of the Chennai airport under second phase. Information collected is that 2544 acres of defence land has been provided at Pallavaram in Chennai for the purpose of drainage. Point is that it would be used for the Pammal drain diversion near the airport boundary.
Many birds get attracted by the drains and it is brought out that the Instrument landing System or ILS would be damaged when a large volume of sewage enters the airport.
Proposal has been prepared by PWD to divert the drain from outside the airport boundary through Cowl Bazaar area and the land would help realise the proposal from PWD. For constructing a parallel taxi track, the airport received 8.50 acres of land from the Indian Navy. There are now 2 runways in the Chennai airport namely main runway and secondary runway.
It is learnt that the Airport Authority of India or AAI has been looking at the feasibility of constructing a parallel taxiway on the small piece of land. Since the date of acquisition, parallel taxiways would take 2 years. For CAT-1appraoch light system, the airport has got 10.2 acres of defence land in St. Thomas Mount.
Runway environment would be identified and aligning the aircraft would be carried out by using the lights. It is important to note that an approach lighting system has a series of strategically placed lights extending outward from the approach end of a runway. Safe landings would be possible.
