Till now, Tangedco has been charging the consumers according to the load requested in the applications. This would change soon. In the future, Tangedco would be calculating the consumers` load demand as per the total floor area or load applied by the consumers whichever is more. It is now said that new domestic connections would be costly for the consumers and they would have to shell out more money.
It is worthy to note that in the tariff petition for 2022-23 Tangedco had mentioned that apart from actual load demanded by the consumer in the application load would also be calculated by the state run utility based on the total floor area of the dwelling unit depending on the applicant`s input. Point is that whichever is higher would be taken into consideration.
The petition also mentioned that the necessary provision for the same might be added in the regulations and the application format might be revised accordingly. Tangedco would charge an applicant for 8 kW (100sq ft is equal to 0.8kW) if the consumer had applied for 4kW load for a 1000 sq ft dwelling unit The consumer would have to pay an amount of Rs 13250 under the existing tariff and this would include registration charges plus others like development charges, security charges and meter caution deposit for 4 kW load.
Mr. Neelakanta Pillai, founder of Citizens Contribution in Democracy highlighted that the consumer would be asked to pay the charges for an 8kW load at Rs 54000 and this would be done once TNREC approves the proposal. He was unhappy regarding Tangedco deciding on the power demand of the consumers. He concluded that the existing consumers would also get affected when they apply for additional load etc. It must be noted that Tangedco made this new proposal in the TNREC`s code review meeting last week.
