Many Chennai residents use MTC buses to reach their destinations in Chennai. They find it difficult when the buses plying on the same route arrive at the bus stops within minutes of each other. Point to be noted is that this would lead to disruptions in the travel plans.
It has become a common sight these days in Chennai many MTC bus passengers getting stranded at the bus stop due to the fact that buses come together or bunching. In addition, work has been going for metro phase 2 of CMRL and this has been creating traffic snarls etc.
Now, to avoid these issues and make the passengers happy, MTC has requested the Chennai Bus app to provide information about bunching of MTC buses also. It is known that this application would provide the passengers of MTC buses with the real time location of buses.
Ever since the Chennai Bus app was launched in May 2022, the app has become a sensational success among the MTC bus passengers. Till now, there have been more than a lakh downloads of this app.
It was brought out by a source belonging to MTC that passengers would be able to plan their travel using the real time location of MTC buses. This would make the passengers waiting for a long time to board the buses at the bus stops in Chennai. The developer of Chennai Bus app has been asked to incorporate certain aspects of improving bus operational efficiency.
It is learnt that if bunching of buses happens on a particular route then alerts would be issued to the depots. Based on the alerts received, the depot managers would regularise the services of the MTC buses.
This idea of making use of the Chennai Bus app to provide a solution to bunching of MTC buses has been appreciated by none other than Mr. K.P. Subramanian, visiting faculty, Division of Transport engineering at Anna University. He then spoke about how bunching of buses was not good for the passengers who depend mostly on the MTC buses. It must be taken into account that MTC has 3000 3000buses but it operates only 2000 buses.
He concluded that it would be tremendous if the application could put an end to the issue of bunching of buses because of the fact that it would make the MTC to operate all the buses available effectively. Point is that for rationalising the bus routes in Chennai, the application could also be used.
