The long suspense over where the second airport would be set up in Chennai has come to an end now and that is a sensational piece of news!!
The Union government has now finalised the place for the second airport in Chennai and it is Parandur near Sriperumbudur. It is around 70kms from Chennai. On Monday, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr. V.K. Singh revealed the place for the second airport in Chennai. He replied to a query raised by DMKs N.V.N. Kanimozhi at the Rajya Sabha.
It must be recalled that the state government had proposed 4 sites for the second airport. The places are Cheyyur and Mamandur in Chengalpet district, Parandur in Kancheepuram district, Pannur in Thiruvallur district. The Airport Authority of India or AAI had conducted inspections at these 4 sites to assess the suitability of these sites. Places like Parandur and Pannur were found to be more feasible for the development of airports.
Later on, AAI forwarded the feasibility study work to TIDCO asking to carry out OLS survey or obstacle limitation survey and charting work at 2 sites. A week back, the process to identify the sites for the second airport in Chennai entered the last leg.
On 16th of July 2022, the industries minister for TN Mr. Thangam Thenarasu met Union Civil Aviation minister Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi. The purpose of the meeting was to get the site clearance from the Ministry. It is noteworthy that getting clearance is mandatory under the provisions of Greenfield Airport Policy.
