The Chennai High Court has ordered the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to review the existing vehicle parking charges in cinema theatres in areas under GCC jurisdiction and fix the same!
The State Government of Tamil Nadu ordered in November 2017 to fix the parking charges for 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers at Rs. 20/- and Rs. 10/- for 2-wheelers.
A petition was filed in court on behalf of the Royappettah Woodlands Theatre Complex in Chennai Metro City to cancel the above Tamil Nadu State Government Order and revise the existing vehicle parking charges to be reasonable!
In this petition, it was mentioned that charges of Rs. 25/- to Rs. 50/- are being collected per hour in areas such as Central Railway station and Broadway area in Chennai Metro City, and Rs. 150/- per hour in the Airport, without giving any due consideration to this, very low rates have been fixed as vehicle parking charges in movie theatres!
When this petition came up for enquiry, judge R. Subramanian pointed out that the present parking charges in movie theatres were rather very low! He ordered that the 2017 Tamil Nadu State Government Order on this as cancelled!
Further. he ordered the State Government of Tamil Nadu to review and refix the present vehicle parking charges in movie theatres!
