Sleep Is crazy important part of growth and development as well as overall health and wellbeing! So, it’s important to know what’s happening especially if our child has other concerns like ear infection / tonsilitis / tooth decay / digestive disturbances / anxiety / poor concentration.

What Are Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD)?

An orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) is when there is an abnormal lip, jaw, or tongue position during rest, swallowing or speech. You may also see this when there are prolonged oral habits, like thumb or finger sucking.


OMD can be caused by:
  • Upper airway obstruction
  • Chronic finger or thumb sucking
  • Extended pacifier or bottle use
  • Orofacial muscular and structural differences
  • Genetics

Signs and Symptoms
  • Speech distortion, particularly a frontal lisp
  • Chronic open mouth positioning
  • Dental abnormalities, such as overjet and open bite
  • Tongue thrust: when the tongue pushes against or between the teeth during speech or swallowing

How does your child sleep? - Some things to look out for
  • Are they restless?
  • Sleep talking?
  • Drooling?
  • Sweating?
  • Teeth grinding?
  • Coughing?
  • Snoring?
  • Nosy breathing?
  • Do they wake up through the night?
  • Is their mouth open?
  • Do they stop breathing?

The bones present in the jaws of the baby would grow well and for that breast feeding and chewing plays an important role. Wisdom teeth coming out have been an issue in the kids and shrinking in the jaw size is the main reason. For removing the wisdom teeth, surgery is necessary. Root cause of the issue gets treated with myo-functional therapy sessions.
