Just recently, it was brought to light that the hospitals and health centres in Chennai were full of patients due to influenza fever. Now, the fever cases have gone down in the city and this has brought a huge relief on the faces of many.
After the peak in the fever cases in the last month, doctors are witnessing a drop in the numbers now. The reason cited by the doctors for the decrease in the fever cases in Chennai was that the schools have been closed for pooja vacations. There is now a 10% to 20% reduction in the number of fever caes.
It is really shocking to note that the number of fever cases might become more when the schools reopen plus due to the forthcoming monsoon. From 80 to 90 fever cases per day, now the cases have come down to around 10 per day. This was according to some doctors at ICH in egmore in Chennai.
Dr. S. Srinivasan, nodal officer for child health mentioned that there are one or two H1NI and dengue cases now but the patients are not very sick. He then explained that the directorate of public health or DPH guidelines have been followed for testing for H1N1 fever cases. He threw light on how category C cases are only being tested as they are kids who are very sick.
Beginning from the third week of September, the number of fever cases have been decreasing, This was as per Dr. Janani Shankar, DMD, Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital. The senior general physician belonging to Billroth Hospitals, Dr. C. Rajendran mentioned that all diseases presented with fever.
He then explained that Covid-19, dengue and H1NI influenza virus were not ruled out and checks for other bacterial and viral infections too were also done in the patients.Hew added that most patients who had fever recovered quickly and not many were becoming very sick.
It must be noted that of late many have been coming with diarrhoea after fever and food poisoning etc were not ruled out in these cases. The patients with diarrhoea have been hydrated.
It is the duty of the public to be very careful now and they must wear compulsorily face masks, covering their nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and maintaining physical distance etc. It is true that wherever crowds are present then the viral infections would spread faster. There are now 327 active H1N1 cases and 384 active dengue cases in TN.
