To access the rural and urban places regarding cleanliness and for active implementation of swachhata mission initiatives in a timely way, a ranking exercise has been taken up by the government of India and this is known as Swachh Survekshan.
The news now is that the city of Chennai has slipped to 44th rank in this survey and is just behind Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika or BBMP. Across the state of Tn, 3 cities have found a place in the list and these are Coimbatore at 42nd rank, Chennai at 44th rank and Madurai at 45th rank. In the year 2021, Chennai was ranked 43rd and in 2020 it was ranked 45th in this survey.
To learn best practices that were followed regarding cleanliness etc, some officers from Chennai Corporation along with some officers of Tambaram Corporation went to Indore. It must be noted that the city of Indore has been ranked one in the survey.
According to an officer from the Chennai Corporation, there were much higher levels of citizen`s partnership in Indore. He added that both residents and corporations must work together to achieve 100% source segregation. As far as solid waste management or SWM is concerned, the Chennai Corporation has been investing money as well as resources. The objective of 100% cleanliness could be reached faster only when the residents of Chennai cooperate.
Chennai city has done well as far as several factors that have been taken into consideration in the survey. The factors were segregated door to door waste collection, cleanliness of markets, residential places, water bodies, roads and daily sweeping criteria etc. Truth is that Chennai fared poorly with respect to cleanliness of drains and public toilets etc. In terms of citizen`s grievance redressal, Chennai has got the least score.
Swachh Survekshan:
It is regarded as the world`s largest cleanliness survey and it covers as many as 4242 cities in a survey for 28 days. It must be noted that this survey has collected feedback from 1.9crore citizens.
