Regarding  maintaining food safety standards and hygiene, the Food Safety Department has undertaken numerous raids and issued many warnings to the food vendors present at CMBT in Koyambedu in Chennai. Till now, nothing has changed.

Here, the food is being kept in open and served to the customers plus there is also an issue of overpricing too. Recently, the officers belonging  to the Food Safety Department raided the shops present at CMBT. It must be noted that these officers directed the food vendors to keep the snacks covered with plastic wrappers and cooked foods kept in covered boxes etc. Hygiene practices such as use of facemasks and caps have also been advised by the officers.

The bitter truth is that these instructions have not been followed by the food vendors. As per a frequent traveler at CMBT it was clear that the sambar rice costs Rs 85 and it was not covered. He hinted that there could also be food contamination issues also.

It was revealed by another passenger that the instructions were followed for just a day or two and after that the food vendors kept doing the same. He added that most times the food items were kept open with insects hovering over the food items.

The shopkeepers are not bothered that the food items are being kept in the open and they mentioned that it was not necessary to cover the snacks as the snacks would be sold quickly. The inconvenience in serving the variety rice to the customers (when kept in closed containers) was cited as the reason regarding why it was left uncovered.

Strict actions would be taken without fail on those food vendors who have not been following food safety standards. Regular checks were also carried out to identify the food vendors. This was as per an officer belonging to the Food Safety Department.
