The deadline for completing the monsoon preparatory works is 15th October.
Now, the officers belonging to Chennai Corporation, WRD and CMWSSB are spending sleepless nights trying to finish the monsoon preparatory works by the deadline. It is known that the rains have been creating issues and have disrupted the normalcy in Chennai.
As per some official sources at the Ripon buildings in Chennai, the monsoon preparatory works have gained momentum and would get over by the 15th of October. The sources added that the scenario would be much better now than in the last year.
As many as 500 locations in Chennai have been identified as flood prone areas and this was based on the previous monsoon experiences. Flood mitigation works have been taken up in these locations.
According to the GCC Commissioner Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, 95% works have been completed and the remaining works would get over by 15th October. He explained that the restoration works of Kosasthalaiyar River and Kovalam basin were long term projects and a 3 years deadline was there to complete the works.
It was highlighted by a Kodambakkam resident that the presence of potholes on the roads was a serious issue as they lead to many fatalities. He added that during monsoons the GCC authorities must attend to battered roads on war footing. Once the work related to SWD, Metro Water and Tangedco gets over then works related to roads re-laying would be carried out in Chennai, This was according to the GCC Commissioner. He hinted that to fix the potholes the road re-laying works would begin from 20th of October.
It was then explained by a source from GCC that the existing SWD is around 2017kms in Chennai and desilting would be done after details are collected by the ward councillors. To drain out the stagnant storm water from low lying areas, the GCC authorities have arranged 400 motor pumps. It was brought out by a senior officer from WRD that the department has intensified the maintenance of water bodies that includes cleaning of debris, silt removal etc. He threw light on how flood prevention works like bund strengthening plus clearing of causeways etc would also be taken up by the corporation.
The long range forecast for rainfall during the post-monsoon from October to December 2022 would be normal and this was as per IMD. The weather office has revealed that the NE monsoon over the south Peninsular including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal would be normal within 88% to 112% of the long period average. As per the weather blogger Mr. K. Srikanth, this year northern parts of TN including Chennai, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvarur districts etc would get normal or slightly above rainfall.
