The chief minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin would be very busy today as he would be launching the construction of twin tunnels in the phase-2 of the metro rail project in the Madhavaram Milk Colony.
The phase-2 metro rail project would be of a distance of 118.9kms with as many as 126 metro stations and it would be ready by the year 2026. The work would be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 61843 crores and would have a 42.6km underground section with 48 metro stations across 3 corridors. Between Madhavaram Milk Colony and Thapal Petti Station, the first boring machine would start tunneling . In November 2022, a second machine would likely start tunneling from Madhavaram High Road to Thapal Petti Station. On 30th of June, the first tunnel boring machine arrived from China is well known.
It is worthy to mention that tunneling of Madhavaram Milk Colony is a part of contract that was awarded to build twin tunnels between Madhavaram Milk colony and Kellys on the corridor-3. Madhavaram Milk Colony metro station would be built at a depth of 15.11m and tunnels would originate from here.
Point to be noted here is that it would be an interchange linking corridor-3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot via IT corridor and OMR and corridor-5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur via Koyambedu and Alandur. At the upcoming Greenways Road metro station on corridor-3, 2 TBMs have been kept ready. Tunneling would likely begin from the end of October as one machine has been installed into the shaft.
Twin tunnels would be built between Greenways Road metro and Adyar Junction metro by TBMs and it would cross under the Adyar River. For metro rail construction, many locations on corridor-3 like Purasawakkam, Greenways Road asn Thiruvanmiyur etc have been barricaded.
