Permission has been given by the government of Tamil Nadu to set up 6 Greenfield universities in the state. Point is that these greenfield universities could offer any courses and could fix any fees for the courses.
On Wednesday, 12th October 2022, Mr. Ponmudy , higher education minister, grabbed many eyeballs when he mentioned that a trust with 100acres of land and Rs 50 crores deposit could apply to the government for establishing a greenfield university. He added that the state government had received 9 applications from top institutions and gave permission to 6 universities.
It is learnt that Saveetha and Jeppiaar are amongst the 2 universities that have got permission to establish greenfield universities.
What is a greenfield university?
It is a private university under the TN Private University Act 2019. It is worthy to note here that Shiv Nadar University in Chennai is one of the first greenfield universities in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Karthikeyan, secretary, higher education explained that the atmosphere has been conducive and there is a great potential in the field of education. He spoke about the Tamil Nadu government establishing as manya s 31 new colleges in the last one year alone. To know about various needs of the industry, a survey was conducted recently with the guidance bureau through Tamil Nadu.
It is superb to note that based on the local needs new courses would be started instead of the conventional courses. For example, there is SIPCOT industrial park in Cuddalore and it would require more graduates from chemistry. So more preference would be given to the chemistry course there.
