The Meteorological Dept has predicted moderate to heavy rains till Tuesday and Chennai is likely to get the first spell of monsoon today. The rains would challenge the preparedness of the administration and the effectiveness of the drain network. In this week, the suburbs would receive heavy rains of 7 to 11cms.
The sky would be cloudy generally and moderate to heavy rains with lightning and thunderstorms would occur in some places. This was as per the weather prediction or the next 2 days in Chennai. In some isolated places in north TN and Chennai, suburban places etc, the rains would be heavy also.
It was revealed by a statement from the Met Dept that there would be rains under the influence of setting in of NE winds over the Bay of Bengal. South peninsular India and a cyclonic circulation over south-west Bay of Bengal off south Sri Lanka Coast in the lower tropospheric levels.
Over the sea, there are dense rain clouds. It seems that the rain might begin from the northernmost part of Chennai that is from Ponneri. Till Sunday morning, the suburbs received heavy rains. It is learnt that Chengalpet received 3cms of rain. Chennai did not get any rain throughout the day and the sky was cloudy. There were some mild drizzles only. Just 2 mm of rains were there in places like Nandanam, Nungambakkam and Pallikaranai etc.
The conditions in Chennai are favourable for the rains in the first 3 days of the week and this was according to an official from the Met Dept.
