Heavy rains in the districts like Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Chengalpet etc near Chennai have resulted in the lakes getting full now.
It is noteworthy that the low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal has been responsible for heavy rains in the above said districts. Point is that 135 lakes in these districts are now full of water due to the heavy rains. Till 6am yesterday, 31 lakes in Chengalpet district were 100% full of water and 37 lakes were 76% full. It must be noted that 143 lakes are 50% to 75% full and 326 lakes are 26% to 50% full. Three seventy three lakes are now 25percent full of water.
The flow of water in the river has increased due to continuous rains and dams in Vayalur, Vallipuram andOld Seevaram are full and surplus water is getting discharged.
Chengalpet district:
In Chengalpet, coastal places like Mahabalipuram, Kalpakkam, Coovathur, Kelambakkam, Thiruporur,Maduranthakam, Seyoor and Tambaram etc are witnessing water loggings in low lying areas and on the roads. It must be noted that due to heavy rains and strong winds a lamp pole fell down in Ariyalur village near Madurantakam. In Seyyur also, electric poles got uprooted in a few places. The GST Road was flooded with rain water due to the heavy rains in Chengalpet district.
Tiruvallur district:
Since last night, areas like Ponneri, Sholavaram, Sengundram, Avadi and Poonamallee in Thiruvallur district have been experiencing heavy rains. This has led to flooding in Kosasthalaiyar, Cooum and Arani rivers etc. Lakes and ponds are getting filled up. There are 1555 lakes in this district that comes under the dept of water resources and rural development and out of these 62 lakes are fully filled with water now. Out of these, 62 lakes were filled up with water. as many as 51 of them out of 574 lakes underWRD and 11 out of 581 lakes under RDD are overflowing completely. Out of total lakes in the district, 166 lakes are 75% full and2 62 lakes are 50% ful and 414 lakes are 25% full. This was revealed by the district administration.
Kancheepuram district:
The heavy rains in the district of Kancheepuram has resulted in 42 lakes out of a total of 381 lakes getting completely full. More than 76% of water is present in 33 lakes now. As manya s 141 lakes have now got 51% to 75% full of water. The water level in other lakes is low.
