In the last week, there was a 5 fold increase in the number of persons affected with conjunctivitis or Madras Eye in Chennai.
According to an ophthalmologist Dr.Manoj Nair, in Chennai there has been a marked increase in the conjunctivitis issue now. Persons with this issue would have red watery and itchy eyes. He spoke about how the private hospital where he has been working is reporting 10 to 15 conjunctivitis cases per day.
In the first week of November there were just 10 patients per day who came for treatment at the Regional Ophthalmologic Institute in Egmore but now 50 patients visit this hospital per day for treatment for conjunctivitis issues. The bitter truth is that almost all the eye hospitals and ophthalmologic clinics in Chennai are witnessing a rise in conjunctivitis cases.
Dr. Manoj explained that the eyes would be reddish due to inflammation in the conjunctiva. The small blood vessels in conjunctiva would cause white of the eye to turn red. Antibiotics are normally given to the patients with secondary infections . The eye specialists want the conjuntivitis affected patients to be isolated and take enough rest. As this eye issue is highly infectious, those with conjunctivitis issue must isolate themselves from others.
