Day time temperatures dipping below 25 degrees are uncommon especially in Chennai but it happened on Monday, 21st November 2022. This is making sensational news now.
Heavy rains were predicted but the chilly climate surprised many residents yesterday. Point is that on Twitter the #ChennaiSnow hashtag was trending. As against the normal of 30.1 degrees Celisus, Nungambakkam recorded 24.9 degrees yesterday. The depression over the Bay of Bengal was moving very slowly and due to that there was no rains but it led to abnormal reduction in the day time temperatures in the city.
Last time in Chennai when the day temperature dipped below 25 degrees Celsius or to 24.6 degrees Celisus was on 10th of November 2002.
It was brought out by a latest weather bulletin that the depression was about 190km from the Chennai coast. By Monday night, the depression is likely to move towards south AP, north TN and Puducherry coast. The intensity of the depression would be maintained. Around Tuesday morning, the depression would weaken into a well marked low pressure area. Today, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued in districts such as Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Vellore etc.
Mr. S. Balachandran, DDG of Meteorology, RMC, Chennai explained that the reduction in the daytime temperature would be there for another 48 hours and later the temperature would become normal. As the residents of Chennai were used to the hot weather in the city this unusual cold or chilly weather has shocked many.
In the next 48 hours, there would be moderate to heavy rains in many districts including Chennai and this would be due to the fact that the depression over the south east Bay of Bengal has started to move towards north TBN-Puducherry coasts.
There would be light to moderate rains for next 2 days in several districts of north TN and isolated places in the south districts etc. This was as per Met dept officials. It is important to note that from 23rd November there would be light to moderate rains in TN and wind speeds could reach 45kmph to 55kmph. The fishermen have been asked not to go into the sea.
