Hereafter, the residents of Chennai need not worry about the darkness in certain road stretches!!

Now, Chennai Corporation is using a digital data collection tool to identify such dark places in the city. This would be as a part of the efforts to make the city safe for the residents.

It must be noted that mobile applications that permit crowdsourcing as well as data collection through image processing would be used to identify certain stretches of roads that would be safe for women. This would be based on several parameters like sufficient lighting, walkways, availability of public transport, security, visibility etc.

Safetipin is an organization that has been working with governments to make sure public places are safe for women. The new mobile applications have been designed by Safetipin. Information is that the data collected would be handed over to the Chennai Corporation for action.

As per the CEO of Safetipin, Kalpana Viswanath it was clear that some of the data was crowdsourced and by means of images also data would be collected. She added that  recommendations would be made to the city corporation regarding problems. It must be recalled that in 2021 in Tondiarpet in north Chennai, a womens safety audit was conducted near schools and colleges etc.

It was found out that 605 of the mapped areas had good presence of people, 85% had public transport within reach and 91% had adequate streetlights. Footpaths and walkability were the issues. In Semmenchery and Tondiarpet, unsafe stretches are present and these have been identified by GCC.
