The news that 1000 new buses would be purchased and the ageing buses would be replaced in the state of TN has been the subject of discussion for many now. In this regard, the TN govt has sanctioned a huge amount of Rs 550 crores to buy new buses. The amount would also be used to renovate 1000 buses.
There are totally 20257 buses belonging to all the 8 state transport undertakings in Tamil Nadu. Truth is that their average age is 7.65 years. According to the norms fixed by the TN govt, 9353 buses that is 46% of the blues are very old.
The approximate cost of the new custom built Bharat Stage 6 diesel buses without ITS components is Rs 42 lakhs. This was as per the GO of the state transport dept. Information collected is that the chairman office, transport department has requested the TN govt to sanction Rs 420 crores to buy 1000 new custom built buses for TNSTC in Salem, Coimbatore, Kumbakonam, Madurai and Tirunelveli.
Salem would receive the lowest of 100 new buses whereas Kumbakonam would receive the highest of 250 new buses. It is worthy to note that the new buses would comply with all the latest provisions of the bus body.
In the assembly, CM of Tamil nadu Mr. Stalin has announced that 1000 old buses would be refurbished with new bodies at rs 130 crores. This was mentioned in the government release. From 70lakhs per day in 2020-21 to 1.70 crores per day in 2022, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of commuters in the transport corporation buses.
In the month of October in 2022, Institute for Road Transport grabbed the attention when it floated a tender to buy 1771 BS6 non-ac buses for TNSTC. This included as many as 402 buses for MTC.
